Prof Ken O'Neill

Invitation to ISBE 2008

The 31st Annual ISBE Conference is the third time I’ve had the pleasure of hosting this important event in Northern Ireland. The previous occasions were in 1985 and 1997.

Our understanding of the role and dynamics of SMEs in our economies has advanced significantly in that time. The ISBE Conference and membership have served as the crucible for many of those advances.

We all recognise that more needs to be achieved, not least in improving communications amongst researchers, policy makers and practitioners. Each still lives too much in their own world, not benefiting from the others. I believe that the Belfast Conference combining, as it is, with the prestigious 35th International Small Business Congress, will facilitate the blending of these separate worlds.

Inviting you would not be possible without the willing support of Invest Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council and InterTrade Ireland and Enterprise Ireland – our major sponsors. You can be assured of a typical Irish welcome and hospitality for the duration of your stay. Till we meet - old friends and new.

Prof Ken O’Neill, Conference Chair, University of Ulster, N. Ireland

Councillor Jim Rodgers

Invitation to Belfast

It is a great pleasure to invite the Institute for Small Business & Entrepreneurship Conference to Belfast, a place where people are proud to live, work and visit. With a strong and modern physical infrastructure, highly skilled workforce and exceptional educational resources, we are ideally placed to compete globally.

As a small business economy, our ability to foster entrepreneurship and stimulate business development is vital to our future prosperity. Through localised, area based interventions and linking our educational resources to industry, we have created strong foundations from which to build our ongoing competitiveness.

Fast growing sectors in Belfast include the creative, environmental, advanced
manufacturing and knowledge industries which are contributing new wealth to the city.

With exciting new retail, tourism and business developments, Belfast has established itself as a dynamic European City of choice for investors, business and leisure tourists alike. I look forward to welcoming you to our City.

The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Jim Rodgers
